Shift your focus. I always hated being called a web developper. I'm not anymore. I'm a flash video game developper. Technological change is part of our work, and our life - change is a constant. There have been some shifts for me that have hit me in the stomach... (changing from pmvc to robotlegs eg) the main problem for me, I now realise was leaving the community that I had become part of.

Re: After flash: who are ‘we’ now?

This article does a great job of bringing the human element back into the Flash shakeup. Most people view it as purely a technology issue. I also think that most people looking in from the outside don't realize that staying around Flash is just as hard as leaving it. When you've been around a platform so long and watched its rise, it can be tough to continue to think about pushing the envelope when a lot of the excitement has moved on.

There is still enough food left for a tribe, its just a much smaller tribe.

Re: After flash: who are ‘we’ now?

Curiously, we had the same discussion today at flashcodersNY group and I just said that...
Marcelo Duende10:14 AM (11 hours ago)to flashcodersny

Wassup Kevin,I became a rider, I don't have a favorite language anymore, despite I still work with AS3, I'm commercially working with Java/Android and html/js/bullshit. But to be honest, I'm about to go deep with business... I'll explain.I just love flash, for real, I think it's the best tool ever made and I just love it, but it wasn't paying my bills anymore. So... from love, it became just work. If it is about to just work for money, I'd rather to open something and just get the freaking money, using any language. But, on top of it, I can create something sick for being the owner of the place, and not just super cool parallaxes from 2007.That's my thought, little bit crazy, but still a thought. Thanks

Re: After flash: who are ‘we’ now?

There is a tribe gathering over at
http://haxe.org/ fresh crossplatform compiling for everyone.
Anyway, the Flash community fractured as it is, started as a niche, hobby platform for animation. Refocusing in on a new niche (gaming and video) is a fantastic move, and maybe we'll even get some new APIs out of it (we've already started to).

Personally, I'm going to keep using it for what I've always used it for - the awesome stuff HTML can't (ever) do, and make web pages out of HTML - just like always. :-)

Then there are those who actually flat out say
“Quit hanging around where there are no buffalo, stupid!”. I've seen a number of condescending blog posts and conference sessions of this very nature by certain individuals who make it a point that they have "moved on" and we need to do the same. It's absurd and childish.
These things were happening even before 11/9 though they have escalated since then, tremendously.Everyone's circumstances and area of focus is different. Just because it makes sense for one person to stop working in a particular technology and adopt some other one hardly means that everyone using that technology should or even could make such a change. People need to stop judging and build with whatever suits the project. It's certainly struck my nerve a few times...

Re: About

Hey.

I'm pretty new to Robotlegs and Signals and super excited to utilize them well, however I'm barely out of the gate and I'm already running into a race condition where my Mediator is onRegistering AFTER a very important Signal has been dispatched from a model. I don't know if my design is weak (largely I'm just following Joel Hooks SignalCafe example) but my app is for mobile, so I have a feeling I could be running into this problem a lot as I'll be creating Views as they are needed. I guess this is partially a plea/request to implement RelaxedSignals… or any pointers/tutorials to consider. I've kind of read about some other Asynchronous libraries but it all seemed a little heavy for the basic problem of "use the last dispatch payload, if one is available".And before I finish just wanted to say thanks for all the great work/writing, Stray. I've been well informed by your posts on the Robotlegs forums!

Re: Code as game design: fun++; frustration- -;

As I try to explain to Rachel - some people do the crossword, some like sodoku.
Me, I like coding.

Re: Why I’m giving away Robotlegs Pomodoro Timers at my Flash on the Beach session

oh wow thank you for sharing! My girlfriend and I just looked over it all and decided we are going to try to make our own weekly schedule (that's something I was already debating doing). Right now I'm just doing around 10-12 a day, after 6pm or 7pm it tends to disintegrate into reading and hanging out, but I'd like to up the number and focus that extra time a bit better. Already it's helped me to actually start blogging (I'm learning Ruby and Rails at the same time and blogging my confusion has helped immensely, heh), and cleaning the house has become less of an overwhelming task since I just do 1 room a day and rotate around the apartment.

thanks again for posting all this, it has really helped to whip me into shape

Re: My FOTB presentation on “Robotlegs 2 and your brain”

That's an excellent point Jason - and it's a great example of how encapsulation can solve these things. If the mediator actually *sets* the hit points then you have a race condition, but if the mediators instead ask the view to *adjust* the hit points, then it doesn't matter what order they happen in.

That's a beautifully clear teaching case for encapsulation! Expect to see it used by me a lot in explaining approaches to designing your API for working with RL2!

Re: My FOTB presentation on “Robotlegs 2 and your brain”

Thank you for the clarification. It will be interesting to see how that pattern (multiple mediators holding an instance of the same view) works out when it comes to race conditions,

EX: If both mediators are listening to the same application 'event', perform logic on the payload of the event, and then set a value on the "EnemySpaceShipView". For instance if the app needs to update the 'hit points' of the enemy space ship in response to a "laser zap event". The EnemyMediator may have logic to reduce the 'hit points' by n. The SpaceShipMediator may have logic to reduce the 'hit points' by n - 10 (due to spaceship armor). The is probably some way to solve this with inheritance, but just an example of a possible race condition.Very Interesting. I am gong to think on this for a bit.Great work.--jason

Re: Why I’m giving away Robotlegs Pomodoro Timers at my Flash on the Beach session

Let me know when it arrives!

Re: Why I’m giving away Robotlegs Pomodoro Timers at my Flash on the Beach session

*grins*

Re: Why I’m giving away Robotlegs Pomodoro Timers at my Flash on the Beach session

How did it go?
